Background: Mrs. Yelena Sakharov, wife of dissident Soviet physicist Andre Sakharov, left Paris on Thursday (21 August) for Italy where she will undergo an eye operation.
Mrs. Sakharov had been seeking permission to travel to Italy for the operation, for over a year. Her requests for visas had always been turned down by the Soviet Government, until they reversed their previous decisions last month.
Andra Sakharov was one of the few brilliant physicists who, under Stalin, gave Russia nuclear parity with the United States.
He has recently gained the title of being the leading Soviet dissident still in the country.
Mrs. Sakharov said on her departure from Paris that she expected to return to Moscow in November. She said her visa was valid for three months, but declined to make any other personal statements.
Mrs. Sakharov contracted an eye disease when she was working as a nurse during World War II.
