Background: The semi-finals of the men's singles in Paris on Saturday (15th June) brought victory for Spaniard Manuel Orantes and the young Swede Bjorn Borg. They are to face each other in the final of the French International Championship on Sunday (June 16th).
Orantes, fully recovered from the back injury which has plagued him for two years, has looked better with every match. He easily outclassed the Frencois Jauffret 6-2,6-4,6-4 on Saturday, using his speed and agility to outmanoeuvre Jauffret in every corner of the court. Jauffret seemed a pale shadow of the man who had earlier knocked out wimbledon Champion Jan Kodes. The result of that match so astonished the Czech player that he demanded a drug test on his opponent.
Borg's semi-final against the American Harold Solomon was something of a marathon, with Borg emerging at the and of the 2 1/2 hour game, his face grey with fatigue. The score: 6-4, 2-6,6-1. The ordeal proved that Borg not only has the strokes and the class, but also the stamina and the courage to hit back at a dogged and dangerous rival.
A capacity crowd of 12,000 packed into the Stade Roland Garros Centre Court for the matches.
