Background: RAMALLAH & HEBRON, WEST BANK

INTRODUCTION: The Israeli authorities have closed Bir Zeit university after three days of protests by Arab students in the occupied West Back. Demonstrators set up roadblocks and threw stones at passing vehicles during demonstrators on Monday (2 November) marking the 64th anniversary of the Balfour Declaration. That was the declaration by Britain in 1917 favouring establishment of a Jewish homeland ion Palestine. There was trouble elsewhere in the West Bank. In Hebron, Israeli troops blew up two Arab-owned houses after a knife attack on a Jewish man. Curfews were in force in Hebron and Nablus.

SYNOPSIS: The protesting students had set up road blocks like this one being cleared by Israeli bulldozers. Troops fired teargas to contain the protest, and forced the demonstrator back inside the Bir ZEIT university.

Roads inside and outside the town were blocked by burning tyres. Traffic was halted on the main Ramallah to Nablus road. Israeli troops arriving on the scene ordered local Arabs to remove the tyres from the roads. For many Arabs, the Balfour Declaration is remembered with bitterness. During the 40 years of British rile after the declaration, heavy Jewish immigration establish the demographic basis for a Jewish state.

The protest continued until Wednesday (4 November), when the Israeli authorities ordered Bir Zeit University closed, to "Maintain order and prevent hostile Activities".

Elsewhere, trouble broke out in Hebron, where Israeli troops blew up two houses after a knife attack. The demolition was condemned by Hebron's mayor, Mustafa Natche.

The Jew who was injured was a settler from a nearby camp. He was stabbed in Hebron market, but shot and wounded two of his assailants. Three men were admitted to hospital, but were not badly injured.
