Background: ISRAELI TROOPS ARE CARRYING OUT SPECIAL PATROLS ALONG THE JORDAN VALLEY, TO PROTECT FARMERS SO THAT THE HARVEST CAN BE REAPED. LAST WEEK, THE ISRAELI DEFENCE MINISTER MOSHE, DAYAN, VISITED THE MAOZ HAIM AND GESHER AREAS IN THE VALLEY AND TOLD FARMERS THAT EACH LITTLE PIECE OF LAND MUST BE FARMED AND THE HARVEST MUST BE REAPED, DESPITE THE ALMOST CONSTANT INCIDENTS ALONG THE ISRAELI/JORDAN BORDER. THE FARMERS NEAR THE JORDAN RIVER ARE NOW WORKING UNDER MILITARY PROTECTION.

ARMOURED PATROL CARS CONSTANTLY CHECK ROADS AND PASSAGES IN THE AREA FOR MINES. EVEN THE FIELDS THEMSELVES ARE CLOSELY CHECKED.

A SPECIAL SET HAS BEEN FITTED TO THE FRONT OF THE ARMOURED VEHICLE, SO THAT AN OBSERVER CAN GAIN AN UNINTERRUPTED, CLOSE VIEW OF THE GROUND, IMMEDIATELY IN FRONT OF THE VEHICLE.

THE OBSERVER LOOKS FOR FRESHLY DISTURBED GROUND WHICH COULD INDICATE THE PRESENCE OF A MINE. ON TUESDAY (MAY 7), WHEN THIS FILM WAS TAKEN A MINE WAS DISCOVERED, BURIED IN THE ROAD, AND THE TROOPS GINGERLY CLEARED THE MINE BEFORE PROCEEDING.
