Background: Technician in Most, a northern-Bohemian town in Czechoslovakia, are in the middle of a unique transportation operation. They are moving an entire church from its original site to a new one over half a mile away (880 metres) without having damaged a brick or a stained glass window....so far.

The church....a fine example of sixteenth century Gothic architectures...was in danger of being undermined.

The Most open-cut coal mine was encroaching towards it an miners followed the rich vein of coal.

The mine -- with reserves of one hundred million tons -- provides the country with much of its coal supplies.

Fifty-three special hydraulic tracks are being used in the operation which will take some six weeks to complete. The church moves about an inch (2. centimetres) per minute.

The Church -- Our Lady of the Sacred Heart -- was considered an unusual and extremely valuable monument and the operation was financed by the Czechoslovakian Government at huge cost.
