    Background: ITALY'S NEWEST LINER, THE 43,000-TON MICHELANGELO, BEGAN HER MAIDEN VOYAGE FROM GENOA TO NEW YORK YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY). THE SHIP IS THE FIRST OF TWO LINERS BEING INTRODUCED ON THE TRANS-ATLANTIC RUN BETWEEN ITALY AND THE UNITED STATES. THE SECOND SHIP, THE RAFFAELLO, WILL MAKE HER MAIDEN VOYAGE EARLY NEXT MONTH.

    THE MICHELANGELO HAS ACCOMMODATION FOR 1,850 PASSENGERS - 530 FIRST CLASS, 466 CABIN CLASS, AND 854 TOURIST CLASS. SHE HAS A CREW OF 720.

    SHE IS OVER 900 FEET LONG AND 58 FEET HIGH.

    THE ENTIRE SHIP AIR-CONDITION, AND AMONG ITS OTHERS ARE A GYMNASIUM, II PROMENADE DECKS, NIGHT-CLUBS, SPECIAL AREAS FOR TEENAGERS AND LARGE CINEMA.

    THE MICHELANGELO AND THE RAFFAELLO ARE THE LARGEST PASSENGERS SHIPS BUILT BY ITALY SINCE WORLD WAR TWO. WHEN THEY ARE BOTH IN SERVICE. THE VOYAGE BETWEEN GENOA AND NEW YORK BE CUT BY 24 HOURS, TO SEVEN DAYS.

    BOTH SHIPS WILL HAVE A CRUISING SPEED OF 26???? KNOTS.

    ANOTHER FEATURE OF BOTH VESSELS IS THAT THEY HAVE GARAGES CAPABLE OF ACCOMMODATING 50 CARS FOR PASSENGERS WHO WANT TO TAKE THEIR OWN VEHICLES TO AMERICA OR TO EUROPE.
