Background: THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA HAS SENT A STRONG NOTE OF PROTEST TO THE INDONESIAN GOVERNMENT FOLLOWING THE SACKING OF THE CHINESE EMBASSY IN DJAKARTA ON FRIDAY BY ABOUT 2,000 SCREAMING CHINESE INDONESIANS. THE CHINESE NOT WARNED THAT INDONESIA WAS PUSHING RELATIONS BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES TOWARDS A COMPLETE SPLIT.

AN INDONESIAN ARMY OFFICER SAID A GROUP OF EMBASSY STAFF FIRED ON DEMONSTRATORS WITH MACHINE-GUNS. THREE WERE WOUNDED. TWO OTHER DEMONSTRATORS WERE INJURED BY TILES AND BOTTLES FLUNG FROM ROOFS BY EMBASSY OFFICIALS DEFENDING THEMSELVES AS THE DEMONSTRATORS SMASHED DOORS AND WINDOWS AND LIGHTED HUGE BONFIRES OF EMBASSY DOCUMENTS.

THE TWO-HOUR DEMONSTRATION WAS SPARKED OFF BY THE REFUSAL OF EMBASSY STAFF TO ALLOW A DELEGATION TO ENTER THE PREMISES TO VOICE THEIR COMPLAINTS. THE MOB SMASHED THREE CARS, RIPPED THE CHINESE CREST OFF THE CHANCERY, TORE DOWN THE FLAG AND REPLACED IT WITH THE INDONESIAN STANDARD. THEY FINALLY LEFT WITH A LORRYLOAD OF "CONFISCATED" FOOD WHICH THEY SAID WOULD SHIP TO VICTIMS OR RECENT FLOODS IN JAVA.

FRIDAY'S EMBASSY ATTACK WAS THE SECOND BY INDONESIAN CHINESE ON PEKING'S DIPLOMATIC PREMISES THIS MONTH. CHINESE IN MEDAN, NORTH SUMATRA, LAST WEEK STAGED A SIMILAR INCIDENT AT THE CHINESE CONSULATE THERE. FEELING AGAINST CHINESE IN INDONESIA ITSELF HAS BEEN RUNNING HIGH SINCE LAST OCTOBER'S COMMUNIST COUP ATTEMPT IN WHICH INDONESIAN AUTHORITIES CLAIMED PEKING WAS INVOLVED.

THE DEMONSTRATION FOLLOWED AN ANTI-PEKING RALLY HELD IN DJAKARTA'S WILD BUFFALO SQUARE UNDER A GIANT STATUE REPRESENTING A LIBERATED WEST IRIAN, FORMERLY DUTCH NEW GUINEA. THE DEMONSTRATORS CHARGED PEKING WITH INTERFERING IN INDONESIA'S INTERNAL AFFAIRS AND THE CHINESE GOVERNMENT RADIO WITH INSULTING THE INDONESIAN PEOPLE AND PARTICULARLY THOSE OF CHINESE ORIGIN. THEY CALLED FOR SEVERANCE OR RELATIONS WITH CHINA AND EXPULSION OF THE CHINESE AMBASSADOR.

SPEAKERS INCLUDED MR COSMAS BATUBARA, CHAIRMAN K.A.M.I., INDONESIAN STUDENTS ACTION COMMAND; DJAKARTA MILITARY COMMANDER, COLONEL KAMAL AND POLICE COMMANDER ARISMUNANDAR.
