Background: The Indian government has renewed its attempts to resolve a prolonged and bitter crisis in the north-eastern state of Assam which has halted the vital flow of oil to the rest of the country.

SYNOPSIS: The Home Ministry in New Delhi was the scene of the talks between the Home Minister, Mr Zail Singh, Assam's Minister for Home Affairs, Mr P. Venkatasubbiah, and militant student from Assam. Their discussions centred on the blockade of oil from Assam to try to force the expulsion of millions of illegal immigrants from the state. The All Assam Students' Union is one of the prime supporters of the blockade. The militants claim their state's population of 12-million includes as many as three and a half million illegal immigrants.
