    Background: BEIRUT, LEBANON

There was heavy fighting in and around Beirut on April 6, 7 and 8 despite an all-party agreement on a plan to disengage Lebanon's rival forces. Christian East Beirut came under renewed artillery bombardment on April 7 by Moslem militias after a night of shelling in which six people were reported killed and more than 30 injured. There was panic as people sought shelter from the shelling and armoured personnel carriers, manned by Lebanese Army soldiers with machine guns, patrolled the streets. The injured were rushed to hospital by ambulance... The Alexandre Hotel in East Beirut was directly hit by a rocket. Smoke poured into corridors forcing the evacuation of guests. Some rooms were devastated, but there were no reported casualties. Residential sections of West Beirut were also shelled and there was skirmishes along the 'Green Line' separating East from West Beirut on April 8. The Moslem militias which seized control of the west on February 6 said they were turning over security to the police and the Sixth Brigade of the Lebanese Army, but they continued to send heavily-armed patrols through the street. Tight security along the Green line was maintained by the Army, which checked civilians for identity cards.
