SYNOPSIS: Johannesburg tennis classic, the South African Open Championship, reached its climax on Friday with the men's singles final - Texan Cliff Richey and spaniard Manuel Orantes in contention. First blood went to Richey, nearest the camera, when Orantes lobbed just over the baseline.
Richey raced to a five-four lead in the first set. And Orantes was soon serving with set point against him.
First set to Richey, six-four. Orantes son found himself serving to stay out of trouble in the second set as we But again the twenty-four-year-old Texan proved too strong, and he won the second set seven-five.
Orantes fought to stay in the match. This time Richey served with set point against him.
That smash gave Orantes the third set six-three. But he was soon in trouble as Richey took a five-four lead in the fourth set. A superb placement brought Richey to forty-fifteen and two match points.

The hard-serving Richey made no mistake with the second point to take the fourth and final set six-four after two hours and twenty-minutes on court. It was his first major title and it carries a twenty-five hundred pounds sterling prize.
