    Background: THE ASSISTANT SECRETARY-GENERAL OF THE COMMONWEALTH SECRETARIAT IN LONDON, MR. A.L.ADU, YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) HAD TALKS WITH THE HEAD OF THE NIGERIAN FEDERAL MILITARY GOVERNMENT AND COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF, LIEUTENANT-COLONEL YAKUBU GOWON, IN LAGOS. MR ADU IS NOW JUST COMPLETING A FACT-FINDING TOUR OF NIGERIA.

    MR ADU, WHO WAS ACCOMPANIED BY THE PERMANENT SECRETARY TO THE NIGERIAN MINISTRY OF EXTERNAL AFFAIRS, MET COLONEL GOWON AT HIS RESIDENCE, THE DODAN BARRACKS, IN LAGOS.

    THE ASSISTANT SECRETARY-GENERAL IS IN NIGERIA ON A FACT-FINDING TOUR AT THE INVITATION OF THE NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT. DURING HIS TOUR HE HAS HAD TALKS WITH ALL THE REGIONAL MILITARY LEADERS ON THE COUNTRY'S CRISIS ON ITS CONSTITUTIONAL FUTURE. HE IS EXPECTED TO MAKE RECOMMENDATIONS ON A POSSIBLE COMMONWEALTH MEDIATION INITIATIVE.

    MR ADU HAS ALSO HAD TALKS WITH GENERAL ANKRA, HEAD OF GHANA'S MILITARY GOVERNMENT, WHO IS ALSO MEDIATOR IN THE NIGERIAN CRISIS.

    MEANWHILE, COLONEL GOWON TODAY DECLARED THAT NIGERIA'S MAIN CONCERN NOW WAS HOW TO BRING THE CURRENT POLITICAL STALEMATE UNDER CONTROL, AND PAVE THE WAY FOR CONTINUED ECONOMIC PROGRESS.
