    Background: ENGLAND, ARMTHORPE & SUNDERLAND

There have been violent scenes at a number of British coal mining villages. Police reported clashes with hundreds of pickets who they said had gone on the rampage through the village of Armthorpe. Bus services were withdrawn after rocks had been thrown at passing vehicles. Police reported thirty arrests. At the nearby Markham main pit, a crane was used to barricade the gates with concrete blocks. Pit officials at Bentley, near Doncaster, reported what they called a sinister development. They said that a number of people had been seen manning the barricades at the pit entrance, wearing balaclava helmets and army-style overall. The head of Britain's State Coal Industry has urged the government to consider legal action against the leaders of the striking miners over picket line violence. Ian McGregor has said be believes that there is some criminal conspiracy going on the intimidate people and to stop them from returning to work. The British Trade Union Congress (TUC) has offered its help in solving the industrial dispute. The TUC's General Secretary, Len Murray, told his General Council that the National Union of Miners (NUM) had expressed interest in the offer of help. The UUM Executive is to consider the proposal when it meets next week in Brighton.
