Background: FOUR CAPTURED PORTUGUESE SAILORS FROM ANGOLA WERE INTRODUCED TO A PRESS CONFERENCE IN LEOPOLDVILLE, CONGO, AUGUST 11. THE FOUR WERE CAPTURED BY THE CONGOLESE ARMY IN BOMA, AT THE MOUTH OF THE CONGO RIVER - THE FRONTIER BETWEEN PORTUGUESE ANGOLA AND THE CONGO REPUBLIC.

CONGOLESE AUTHORITIES CLAIMED THEY WERE CHASING ANGOLAN REFUGEES, BUT THE PRISONERS MAINTAINED THAT THEY WERE ON AN OFFICIAL HYDROGRAPHIC MISSION TO DISCUSS CONGO NAVIGATION WITH CONGOLESE AUTHORITIES IN BOMA.

ON DISPLAY TO NEWSMEN WERE ARMS ALLEGEDLY CAPTURED FROM THE PORTUGUESE, AMONG THEM TWO GERMAN-MADE RIFLES AND A GERMAN-MADE LIGHT MACHINE-GUN, STAMPED WITH SWASTIKA AND INSCRIPTION "KRUPP 1938", A LARGE AMOUNT OF AMMUNITION FOR BOTH SIGNAL ROCKETS, AND HANG-GRENADES.

    M. KAPELLA, A CONGOLESE GOVERNMENT SPOKESMAN SAID THE PARTY HAD NO HYDROGRAPHIC EQUIPMENT OR CHARTS OF THE RIVER.

THE PRISONERS REFUSED TO ANSWER QUESTIONS WHETHER THEY HAD BEEN BEATEN BY CONGOLESE TROOPS WHEN BROUGHT TO LEOPOLDVILLE AUGUST 10, NEARLY LYNCHED IN FRONT OF MILITARY HEADQUARTERS BY A STREET MOB, AND BEATEN AGAIN DURING INTERROGATION. CONGOLESE ARMY LEADER GENERAL MOSUTU ATTENDED THE PRESS CONFERENCE. ALSO ATTENDING: PORTUGUESE AMBASSADOR SEQUEIRA. HE REFUSED TO ANSWER QUESTIONS BUT WAS AWAITING INSTRUCTIONS FROM LISBON. ANOTHER VISITOR AT THE PRESS CONFERENCE WAS NEW CONGOLESE PREMIER CYRILLE ADOULA.
