Background: TODAY (TUESDAY) WAS LADIES DAY AT THE WIMBLEDON TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS, WITH THE OPENING TIES OF THE OPENING TIES OF THE WOMEN'S SINGLES. DEFENDING CHAMPION AND TOP SEED, AUSTRALIA'S MARGARET SMITH, GOT OFF TO A CRACKING START WITH A 6-2, 6-1 WIN.

THE BIG AUSTRALIAN GIRL TOOK JUST 36 MINUTES TO BEAT ANNETTE VAN ZYL, THE 18-YEAR-OLD SOUTH AFRICAN CHAMPION. MISS SMITH, ALREADY CHAMPION OF AUSTRALIA, ITALY AND FRANCE THIS YEAR, IS DETERMINED TO RETAIN HER WIMBLEDON CROWN AS A FURTHER STEP IN HER AMBITION TO WIN THE FIVE MAJOR CHAMPIONSHIPS IN ONE SEASON -- THE OTHER BEING THE U.S. TITLE.

SHE SHOWED A LITTLE NERVOUSNESS AT THE START TODAY - UNDERSTANDABLY BECAUSE MISS VAN ZYL IS ONE OF THE FEW PLAYERS TO HAVE BEATEN HER THIS YEAR. BUT SHE SOON SETTLED DOWN TO DOMINATE WITH MAJESTIC POWER PLAY AT THE NET. THE SOUTH AFRICAN GIRL NEVER LOOKED LIKE GETTING ANYWHERE NEAR VICTORY.

IF THE SEEDINGS GO TO PATTERN, MISS SMITH SHOULD MEET IN THE FINAL THE BRAZILIAN STAR MARIA BUENO, WHO TODAY HAD AN EQUALLY CONVINCING WIN.

RAIN HALTED THE PROGRAMME AFTER LESS THAN AN HOUR'S PLAY. AND OUT CAME THE TARPAULIN COVERS TO PROTECT THE COURTS -- A FAMILIAR SCENE LAST YEAR WHEN THE CHAMPIONSHIPS HAD TO BE EXTENDED TO A THIRD WEEK. CROWDS DASHED FOR SHELTER OR HUDDLED UNDER UMBRELLAS. PLAY WAS RESUMED LATER.
