Over 20,000 identically dressed couples were married in New York City on July 1 by Unification Church leader Reverend Sun Myung Moon. Thousands of spectators attended the Maddison Square Garden ceremony which lasted 40 minutes. Couples from 70 different countries filed past the Reverend and his wife who sprinkled them with holy water. Reverend Moon acted as a matchmaker for most of the engaged pairs, composed mainly of European or Japanese. Their ages range from 21 to 62, many couples had been planning to marry for as long as four years. Two thirds of those present were partners of different races or cultures. In the final vow the Reverend bade them exist in harmony as centres of love before society.
