Background: Troops guarded the military hospital where the Army commander, General Rene Schneider, was being treated after an assassination attempt.
Gunmen shot and seriously wounded the general as he was on his way to his office on Thursday (October 22nd).
A Defence Ministry communique said that three unidentified cars forced the general's car to stop and gunmen ran to it, smashed the windows, the fired into the car. General Schneider was wounded in the throat and stomach.
He was rushed to Santiago hospital where doctors immediately performed an emergency operation and appealed urgently for blood donors. The Defence Ministry communique said his condition was critical.
The assassination attempt raised tension in the Chilean capital over the expected election of Senor Allende, who is an avowed Marxist. First reports attributed the attempt on the general's life to right-wing extremists.
