Background: Queen Elizabeth and her husband, Prince Philip, arrived in Paris to a 101-gun salute on Monday (May 15) as they began a five-day state visit to cement Anglo-French relations prior to Britain's entry into the Common Market.

Cold weather reduced crowds along the motorcade route from Orly airport to the Elysee Presidential Palace. Spectators stood only one or two deep on the pavements.

But they cheered, waved and cried "Vive La Reine" as the Queen, sitting beside President Georges Pompidou in an open car and escorted by motor cycle outriders and mounted guards carrying sabres, passed by.

Almost as soon as she arrived at the Palace, the Queen described Britain and France as "old friends engaged in a new venture" and expressed the hope that they would combine their talents in what she called the "great European partnerships."
Later, the Queen shook hands with members of the French Cabinet, headed by the Prime Minister, M. Jacques Chaban-Delmas, and recalled that France had captivated her with courtesy and charm during her last state visit in 1957 -- one year before General de Gaulls returned to power.

But this time, the Queen seems to have captivated France.
