SYNOPSIS: Moroccan horsemen road through the streets of Fez, the country's Imperial and religious capital on Wednesday, as part of the traditional rites on the day of the circumcision of 7-year-old Crown Prince Sidi Mohamed. Prince Sidi Mohamed. There was also folk-singing and traditional dancing in the centre of Fez, as the riders rode through the town. Throughout the country in fact, the people were celebrating this traditional Islamic festival. In accordance with tradition, forty thousand Moroccan children were circumcised on the same day as their Crown Prince.

The origin of the practice of circumcision is unknown, but its origin stretches back into antiquity. In past history the Indo-Germanic, the Mongol and the Finno-Ugrian-speaking peoples were unacquainted with the practice, and wherever it is performed as a traditional rite it is done either before or at puberty. Sometimes among arabian peoples, it is done just before marriage.

In the Fez circumcision ceremonies, a religious procession was held in the evening, in which King Hassan took part.

The young Prince Sidi Mohamed paraded through the streets of the town on horseback, accompanied by several other children of the Royal family. The Crown Prince was making the traditional pilgrimage to the Moulay Idriss Mosque, through the Casbah area of Fez.

As he passed through the narrow, twisting streets, the bands played, and the darkening scene was enlivened by the noises of the crowd, and the decorative lights. It was an atmosphere straight from the tales of the Arabian nights. Finally, with King Hassan in attendance, the Crown prince and other children trooped into the Mosque, carrying on a tradition that has lasted for hundreds of years.
