Background: To the thump of pop music, western-style slot machines have made their debut on the Polish entertainment scene. In a departure from Poland's normal cultural policy, the state enterprise responsible for organising entertainment has set up a "fun saloon" on Warsaw's main thoroughfare, Marszalkewska Avenue.
The main aim is to attract people away from the street beer stands and into the warmer, alcohol-free entertainment areas. The saloons may spread throughout Poland, if this one is a success--but officials fear that Poland's youth will copy their elders telephone practices and fill the machines with bits of iron and shoe plate.
SYNOPSIS: Western culture has come to Poland, complete with the natural backdrop of thumping pop music. In a departure from normal policy, the state enterprise responsible for entertainment has opened a "fun saloon" in Warsaw. Pinball machines, "trial drive", "sea devil" and many more testimonies to Western culture have captivated young people along Warsaws main thoroughfare, Marszalkowska Avenue. And in a small room upstairs, people over eighteen can play on gambling slot machines.
The main aim of the new fun salons is to lure people away from the street beer stands...only coffee and fruit juice can be bought here.
The machines were bought from the Antwerp subsidiary of an American company which may have found an expanding market in Eastern Europe. The manager of this centre said that profits may go to financing more fun saloons throughout Poland.
