    ROLF WOLFSCHOHL OF WEST GERMANY, WHO HAS HIMSELF WON THE TITLE THREE TIMES, HAD TO BE CONTENT WITH SECOND PLACE AFTER A CLOSE DUEL WITH LONGO UNTIL THE FINAL HALF-MILE.THE ITALIAN PUT ON THE PRESSURE THERE AND LEFT WOLFSCHOHL 13 SECONDS BEHIND.

    ALTHOUGH LONGO'S COMPATRIOT SEVERINI TOOK THIRD PLACE -- ABOUT 90 SECONDS BEHIND -- ITALY LOST THE TEAM VICTORY TO BELGIUM.

    AFTER THE FIRST MILE (1.6 KILOMETRES) OF THIS GRUELLING 15-MILE (24 KILOMETRES) RACE, ONLY TWO MEN WERE OUT IN FRONT - LONGO AND WOLFSCHOHL.WITH LONGO PACING THE GERMAN ALONG THE PAIR STEADILY INCREASED THEIR LEAD ON THEIR 38 RIVALS.

    AT THE HALFWAY MARK WOLFSCHOHL SEEMED TO BE TIRING AND ONLY JUST HANGING ON, BUT THE REMAINED GLUED TO LONGO'S WHEEL UNTIL THE LAST ASCENT OF THE ROAD TO THE FINISH.
