Background: Detroit may be in last place in the American League Eastern Division, but they still defeated the Division leading Boston Red Sox 5-1 on Saturday (20 September).
The game was tied until the third inning when Bob Molinaro slammed a double off Boston pitcher Luis Tiant. A few minutes later Ben Ogilvie hit a single and Molinaro scored dropping Boston one run behind.
Then, in the fourth inning, Tigers' third baseman Aurelio Rodriguez blasted a triple which kept the tension up. Later in the inning, with the bases loaded, Ron Leflore singled and to runs scored.
Molinaro got another shot at the plate, too, and blasted his third hit of the day, a single to left field, which scored the fourth run.
All in all, a bad day for Boston, but good news for the Baltimore Orioles, who are breathing down Boston's neck in the race for the Division title.
