Background: Three Cuban insurgents received the death sentence June 14 by a military tribunal at Santiago Cuba. Next day they were shot at dawn - the first return to action by firing squads in five months, bringing to 560 the unofficial total of those executed under the Castro regime.

The three men were Captain Manuel Beaton, 30, his brother Cipriano, and Felipe Martinez. The tribunal took 17 minutes to find the defendants guilty of killing an Army major who went to persuade the three men and a small insurgent band operating in the Sierra Maestra hill, Oriente Province to surrender.

Other members of the band were sentenced to prison terms ranging from five to 30 years. Seven youths were ordered to reformatories until they reach maturity. One was acquitted.
