    Background: The World Bank Conference opens at the Kenyatta Conference Centre in Nairobi, Kenya, on Monday (24 September, 1973), and the Kenyan Government has already stepped up security precautions around the building.

    Armed police with walkie-talkies are on guard at every entrance, and the credentials of anyone wanting to enter are carefully examined. A special bomb disposal squad has been stationed at the Centre, and arrangement made for them to be contacted if any suspicious objects are found.

    The Kenyan Government has guaranteed the safety of all delegates to the Conference, especially the South African and Portuguese representatives.

    Since 1969 the World Bank has achieved its overall goal for Africa which was announced by the than President of the Bank Group, Mr. Robert S MacNamara. Over the last five years, African countries have been able to borrow nearly two thousand million dollars - an increase over the previous five years of 214 per cent.

    SYNOPSIS: At the impressive Kenyatta Conference Centre in Nairobi, Kenya, the annual meeting of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund opens on Monday, amid intense security precautions. During the week-long meeting, the Kenyan Government will be responsible for the safety of high-ranking delegates from a hundred-and-twenty-five countries including a Portuguese representative and the South African Minister of Finance. The Nairobi police have there-fore mounted one of the strictest security operations in Kenya's history.

    It will be the first time that the Conference has been held in Africa, and it could prove to be a truly historic meeting, if plans for international monetary reform are agreed.

    Throughout the week police with walkie-talkie sets will guard the delegates, and check everyone entering or leaving the building. A special bomb disposal squad has also been stationed nearby in case of emergencies.
