Background: The Royal Laotian Army, supporting the Prince Boun Oum Government in Vientiane, is continuing its action against rebels and trying to retake rebel-held territory, though the Vientiane Government has announced its willingness to order a cease-fire if the rebels will also stop fighting.

This film taken by VISNEWS cameraman at the advance base, shows the Government troops moving towards Muang Kasai, near the junction of the Vientiane-Luang Prabang road and the road leading to the rebel-held plain of Jars.

Government forces won the strategic junction after two months' fighting, but lost it again to the rebels. Now attempts are being made to retake the junction without which operations against the rebel strong-holds in the province of Xien Khouang would be difficult.

The army, under the command of Col. Kouprasith Abay, one of the trusted and best officers of General Phoumi Nosavan, is slowly moving ahead on the road from Vientiane.

Heavily mined, the road is first cleared. As the trucks and tractors clearing the road return to the advance base and clean the route the artillery moves on. One of the heavy pieces is the 105 howitzer made in U.S.A. The rebels, too, have some U.S. howitzers taken from the Government forces, apart from Russian guns. But the rebels rely mostly on guerrilla activities and small arms.
