    KAY: "The Olympic flame will be transmitted by satellite from Athens to Ottawa and there an impulse will activate a laser beam restoring the original flame instantaneously. And just like the sun's rays in Greece, the laser beam will be reflected into a parabolic mirror igniting the fuel in an urn on Parliament hill and in less than one twentieth of a second. Today's test run worked, but just n case the laser fails to produce a flame on July the 13th, four back-up flames will arrive by plane from Athens. Once the flame hits Canadian soil 500 traditional torch carrying runners will relay it to Montreal where, on July the 17th, it will be carried into the Olympic stadium to officially open the '76 games. Then another less glowing piece of tradition. The Olympic flame will not be visible to anyone outside the stadium and that's because the unfinished structure has no tower to which the flame can be attached.     Background: A major operation has been launched to ensure that the Olympic flame for the Montreal Olympic Games in Canada this year will travel Safely, straight from Greece.

    It is costing about $230,000 to transmit the flame - by satellite - from Athens to Ottawa, where an impulse will activate a laser beam restoring the original instantly.

    The laser beam will be reflected int a parabolic mirror, igniting the fuel in an urn on Parliament Hill and it will all take less than a twentieth of a second.

    A trial run of the operation took place on Thursday (27 May) and it was successful, but there is an elaborate second plan being organised in case it does not work on 13 July.

    Four back-up flames are being flown in from Athens.

    When the flame arrives in Canada, 500 torch carrying runners will relay it to Montreal where, on 17 July, it will be carried into the Olympic stadium to officially open the Games.

    One tradition has had to be forfeited this year. The flame is normally visible from a height of 120 feet, but the tower on the stadium is uncompleted so the flame will burn from a height of 20 feet.

    SYNOPSIS: A method which marries 20th century technology to a tradition which began many centuries before the birth of Christ will be used to transport the Olympic flame this year. It involves the transmission of the flame by satellite to Ottawa in Canada for the Montreal Olympics in July.
