Background: In Sudan the fourth National Assembly has opened in Khartoum. The official opening was presided over by Sudan's leader president Jaafar Nimeiri.

SYNOPSIS: Sudan's National Assembly first sat at the beginning of 1978 and comprises 225 elected members .... all or whom officially stand under the label of the Sudanese Socialist Union. President Nimeiri has banned all other parties. However the People's Assembly is seen as the only centre of political debate in Sudan.

In his opening speech, President Nimeiri told the Assembly that Sudan supports the Palestine Liberation Organisation. He said the P.L.O was the only body representing the Palestinian people. He added that it was his government policy to stand alongside all liberation organisations. President Nimeiri also announced changes in the ownership structure of Sudan's massive Gezira irrigation scheme, where most of the country's cotton exports are grown. The Gezira, covering about two million acres and called "the largest farm in the world", was created by the British before World War Two. It has long been regarded as a successful example of partnership between the Sudan government, the Gezira Board which administers the area, and the tenants who farms individual plots and provide labour. However, production has fallen nearly 50 percent in the last decade. President Nimeiri told the assembly that the cotton scheme would not longer be a shared scheme between the tenant farmers and the government. But he said the Geizra new management would allow farmers to sell their cotton directly to the government.
