Background: INTRODUCTION: Yugoslavia took a major step towards next year's World Soccer Cup finals in Spain when they defeated Greece 5-1 in a European Group Five qualifying match in Split on Wednesday (29 April). The victory lifts the Yugoslavs into second spot over third -placed Greece on goal difference. Two teams will qualify from the five-team group. Yugoslavia have played four matches to the Greek's five and must be favourites to qualify with leaders Italy who have eight points from four games.
SYNOPSIS: It was an emphatic victory. Yugoslavia dominated with fine attacking moves like this. From a Brilliant through ball Edhem Sljivo hit a beautiful long-range shot from fully 25 metres (yards) giving the Greek keeper no chance.
The Greeks were swept aside as Yugoslavia pushed forward again. Following a fine move along the left-wing Sljivo passed to Yahid Halilodzic who shot home from an acute angle.
The game was put beyond Greece when a Yugoslav forward was tripped in the penalty area by the goalkeeper as he was clear.
The Yugoslav keeper Dragan Pantelic took his side's penalties and he made no mistake. At half-time Yugoslavia were 3-0 up and in command.
In the second half another flowing attack ended with a cross from the by-line which Zlato Vujovic, standing unmarked at the far post, headed home.
A few minutes later Vujovic scored an almost identical goal from the other side. The cross was again headed home. The Greeks who had not beaten Yugoslavia for 47 years, were virtually out of the game.
But they did score a consolation goal when the home-side relaxed. A Greek forward ran through the Yugoslav's defensive wall and was brought down in the area.
Although Kostikos scored from the spot to make it 5-1 there was no time for the Greeks to peg back the deficit.
