Background: Fighting continues in the Khmer Republic. On Thursday (20 December), three companies of Khmer troops from the 2nd Division launched an armoured assault near Highway 1, 20 kms east of the Khmer capital, Phnom Penh.
With Armoured Personnel Carriers forming a frontline, government troops came into immediate contact with Communist-led insurgents.
Highway 1, leading eat from Phnom Penh to South Vietnam ins one of the main supply routes for the Communist insurgents. The Highway is used to carry arms and food to insurgents positioned in the area.
The Khmer High Command is reportedly to have ordered General Dien Del --- commander of the 2nd Division responsible for the security of Highway 1 -- to clear this area of Communist insurgents.
With the dry season approaching, government troops are consolidating their positions around Phnom Penh against anticipated large-scale Communist attacks.
