    Background: CASTELLET, SOUTHERN FRANCE

The Paul Ricard circuit in southern France was on April 14 ready for the third race in this year's Grand Prix calendar, due to take place on April 17. The track is famous for its long straight, which allows great speeds to be reached. The lap record is held by the Italian driver Riccardo Patrese who reached an average speed of 209 kilometres (129 miles) an hour in last year's race. New regulations have meant that this season the cars no longer have the 'skirts' which allowed drivers to corner faster. The introduction of turbo engines by some teams may, however, compensate for the slower cornering, but some of these cars suffer from poor reliability. Leading on points in the drivers' championships so far is the Austrian, Niki Lauda, followed by Nelson Piquet of Brazil and England's John Watson. The French driver, Rene Arnoux, who won the event last year is currently in sixth position.
