Background: The Marxist government of President Samora Machel has claimed that Rhodesia attacked a Mozambique border post at Mafue, about 300 miles (400 kms) north of the capital of Mapute (formerly Lourenco Marques).

The attack was alleged to have taken place late in February during the early hours of the morning, with two people killed and many others wounded. It also alleged that napalm was used in the attack.

Journalists and photographers visited the border post about one month later at the invitation of the Mozambique government and reported that there were no visible signs of Rhodesian forces across the border.

However, they were shown what appeared to be the wreckage of an aircraft allegedly shot down by Mozambique forces during a Rhodesian attack.

A spokesman for the Mozambique government said there was an abnormally large number of civilians at the post at the time of the attack but gave no reason as to why they were there. He said only that the civilians arrived at the border post the day before.

During the past few weeks, troops were reported to be massing on the borders with Rhodesia as president Machel's government stepped up its war fever campaign among Mozambiquans.
