The United Nations Security Council met in New York on January 6 to consider a draft resolution calling for withdrawal of South African forces from Angola. The resolution was submitted by 11 countries, which part from Angola itself included India and Nicaragua, whose representative Javier Chamorro Mora addressed the meeting in his role as President of the Security Council. The Angolan resolution comes after three days of fighting in Angola between South African Defence Force units and SWAPO (South West Africa People's Organisation) guerrillas, in which South African claims to have killed 324 SWAPO fighters. After the voting, Security President Mora announced the result--the resolution was carried by 13 votes, with Britain and the US abstaining.US Representative Charles Lichenstein, Alternative Representative for Special Political Affairs, expressed his country's concern over the Angolan situation and stressed the need for a political solution.Angolan representative Elisio de Figueiredo said his country had always been willing to talk to others, but warned that any settlement must be complied with by all countries in southern Africa.
