WALDHEIM (SEQ 1): "I would like to express my deep appreciation for the statesmanship which brought about the peaceful solution to a grave and long standing problem. An intolerable situation persisted for more than fourteen years and caused enormous human suffering and destruction not only in Southern Rhodesia but also in neighbouring countries. That situation has been resolved in the spirit of farsightedness and co-operation which is essential to peace. I know that you will all join with me in extending our best wishes to the new leadership of Zimbabwe and will share my hope that all parties will now work together in a spirit of reconciliation so that their country may progress as a united, peaceful and stable nation."
SALIM A. SALIM (SEQ 2): "We share with the people of Zimbabwe in their period of glory, not only because of the significance of this momentous development for Zimbabwe, but also because we all recognise the positive impact the freedom of Zimbabwe will have in the struggle to eliminate the remaining vestiges of colonialism and racism in the African continent. Furthermore, we are equally conscious of the universal dimension of this victory in the process of decolonization....at a time when the United Nations, this year, is marking the 20th anniversary of the declaration and the granting of independence to colonial countries and peoples. In recent historical...(indistinct) the victory of the Patriotic Front of Zimbabwe is only comparable in significance and magnitude with the collapse of Portuguese colonialism almost six year ago. This is not the time to recapitulate the history of the agony, suffering and sacrifice of the people of Zimbabwe which subsequently led to their victory. We in this committee, and I believe, within the international community as a whole, can do no less than reinforce the wide appeal by the Prime Minister, Mr. Robert Mugabe, in support of national reconciliation, national unity and pressing ahead with the momentous task of national reconstruction."
