Background: Italian Foreign Minister Emilio Colombo arrived in Buenos Aires on August 8 to begin talks aimed at improving relations between Argentina and the European Economic Community (EEC). During his visit Mr. Colombo will meet President Reynaldo Bigone and Foreign Minister Ramon Aguierre Lanari. The EEC imposed sanctions on Argentina during the Falklands conflict with Britain but relations between Italy and Argentina are generally good. Unlike other members of the EEC Italy refused to join in the extension of trade sanctions imposed in May. A large part of the Argentine population is made up of Italian immigrants who enjoy a flourishing community life. "El Caminito" is a famous street in the Italian quarter of Buenos Aires with numerous Italian banks, bars and restaurants.
