MR. BARBER: "The expansion that we planned for has been slow in coming. But sales in the shops are now rising, and there is a growing optimism in British industry. Taxes are down. Interest and mortgage rates are down. Private house building is booming. we have repaid most of the debts run up by the Labour government, and our reserves now stand at a record level. At the opening of the five-day conference on Wednesday (13 October), delegates supported Britain's entry into the Common Market by 2,474 votes to 324, after three-hours of debate.

Delegates arriving for Thursday's session were greeted by a small group of old-age pensioners, who were demonstrating for increased allowances.
