    Background: BELO HARIZONTE, BRAZIL

Fifty one people are known to have been killed when floods hit the town of Belo Harizonte in south-east Brazil on January 4. But rescue work is still being carried out and officials fear the final death toll may rise yet higher. The heavy rains and flooding in the area, which began on the night of January 2, have also made at least 2,000 people homeless. Most of the victims in Belo Harizonte and the surrounding countryside were either swept away in the floods and torrential rain or died when homes and other buildings caved in on them. The downpour lasted four hours. Roads were ripped up, vehicles swept away the drains burst open. The district is an important mining area of Brazil, and damage could run into millions of dollars.
