Baalbek in one of the principal tourist attractions of the Lebanon, with its two vast Roman temples. The International Festival, which takes place every year, began in 1956, when a group of Lebanese music lovers decided that the unique temple sites would make a fine setting for concerts, recitals and plays. Many famous European artists and orchestras have taken part; but the dancing of the Lebanese Folklore troupe also forms an important part of the Festival.
