Background: The President of the Yemen Arab Republic (YAR) Lieutenant colonel Ibrahim Muhammad al-Hamdi, arrived in Paris on Monday (4 July) for talks with President Valery Giscard d'Estaing. President Al-Hamdi is seeking French help on his 3-day visit to build up his armed forces. This would include construction of a naval base and a military telecommunications.
SYNOPSIS: Observers said the two leaders talks would be dominated by one vital topic: the security of the Red Sea and oil routes to the Indian Ocean.
Support for the Yemen Arab Republic Arabia and other oil-producing states on the Arabian Peninsula because of the growing Communist presence in the adjoining People's Democratic Republic of Yemen. To prevent a left-wing takeover, in the Yemen Arab Republic, Saudi Arabia has agreed to spend around 150 million dollars (about 88.0 million pounds sterling) on development of her air, sea and land forces. France will match this expenditure in military equipment.
In a welcoming speech, President Giscard said he felt that the 4th of July 1977 would make history in the relations between France and the Y.A.R. It was the first time a President of the Yemen Arab Republic had visited France officially.
President Al-Hamdi, who is commander-in-chief of his country's armed forces, was looking forward to visiting Story camp near Paris to watch a battlefield demonstration of light and medium tanks and armoured cars. France is already helping the Y.A.R. to build a new airport at Hodeida and new road from Ta'iz to Aden. And the French also hope to mastermind the introduction or colour television and to win a large contract to build a chain of resort hotels there.
