Background: Major Yuri Gagarin, first Soviet cosmonaut arrived at the Almaza airport at 15140 on January 29, 1962 for an eight day official visit to the United Arab Republic and was met by Vice President Kamal Eddin Hussein, on behalf of President Gamal Abdel Nasser.
At the airport to greet him were Mr.Salah Hedayet, Minister for Scientific Research, Air Marshall Mohamed Sidky Mahmud Commander of the Air Force, Mr.Vladimir Frovelev, the Soviet Ambassador to Cairo, Senior Officers of the Air Force and the staff of the Soviet Embassy in Cairo.
Major Gagarin alighted from the Soviet aircraft and was presented with flowers by the ladies from the Soviet Embassy and was greeted by the Vice President.The National Anthems were played and the guard of honour inspected.
The Major afterwards shook hands with the personalities that had come to greet him and with the military attaches of the foreign embassies in Cairo and waved at the cheering crowd filling the airport.
In an open car, Major Yuri Gatarin and Vice President Kamal Eddin Hussein then drove to the Republican Palace at Kubbeh.All along the drive, Gagarin was wildly cheered by the enthusiastic crowds of citizens and students who had gathered to see him.
