Background: The Chinese Nationalist Government in Formosa is currently conducting a massive air-lift called "Operation Hurricane". Nearly 5,000 guerrillas, pushed into the Burma-Laos border by communist forces when they took over China, are now being evacuated to Formosa.
These troops, living off the land, have caused much concern to the Burmese authorities for over a decade. Recently, they were pushed into Thailand and Laos when the Burmese army made a concentrated attack on the remnants of the Koumintang regime.
Thailand was also involved with the Guerrillas, and now the Formosa Government is taking back all these irregulars. They are now being massed around Cheng Mei in Thailand.
One of the early parties to arrive at Ping tung Airport in Formosa were 150 officers and men. As they arrived, waving their national flags, they were sprayed with DDT. Among them, eleven-year-old, Chow Hsaio Chu attracted much attention form the press.
There was also a husband-and-wife team from the jungles; and an eight-year-old orphan girl Lee Hsiu Yen. She was adopted by a Colonel of the Koumintang forces. The soldiers were given money, clothes and essentials before being taken by trucks and a special train to Wujih, (Taichung) training camp where they are to be rehabilitated. The camp is equipped with shops, a theatre and sports grounds for the soldiers.
The Nationalist Government (it is reported) will still be requiring the soldiers' services.
