Background: Tennis - and in the women's final of the World Invitation Tournament in Kobe, Japan on Sunday (20 May) Wimbledon Champion Martina Navratilova crushed teenager Tracy Austin of the United States to win 6-1, 6-1.
SYNOPSIS: In the last year's tournament, sixteen-year-old Tracy Austin defeated Martina Navratilova with an identical 6-1, 6-1 score, The twenty-two-year-old Wimbledon champion, formerly of Czechoslovakia who now lives in the United States, had never won the Japanese tournament before. She reached the final by defeating Kathy May Teacher of the United States and Tracy Austin won her place in the final by beating Detty Stove of the Netherlands.
After winning the first set, Martina Navratilova settled down and Tracy Austin's normally confident baseline game deserted her. Navratilova has beaten the young American five times in their six matches this year.
By the final game, it was clear that Miss Navratilova was playing her best tennis with barely a mistake. This fine forehand volley gave her thirty-love with a five-one lead in the second set.
Navratilova serves for match point. She won her twenty eight thousand dollars US. Tracy Austin who recently won the Italian singles title had the compensation of the fourteen thousand dollar second prize. After her win, Miss Navratilova said she intended to concentrate upon playing on grass rather than hard courts in preparation for her defence of the Wimbledon singles championship title later this year.
