Background: President Alfredo Stroessner of Paraguay arrived in Rome from Munich on Monday (23 July) on a short private visit. He was received by Italian President Giovanni Leone at the Quirinale Palace and was scheduled to have an audience with Pope Paul before departing from Rome on Wednesday (25 July).
Details of discussions between the two presidents were not disclosed, due, it was said, to the private nature of President Stroessner's visit.
Accompanying President Stroessner were the Paraguayan Foreign Minister, Raul Sapena Pastor, Finance Minister Cesar Barrientos, and Public Works and Communications Minister Marcial Samaniego.
President Stroessner and his party had also visited Madrid, Paris, and Bonn prior to Rome.
