Background: The three day Youth Festival, staged by the Greek Cypriot community, started on May 30th. with an accent on politics, as is usual in these days of fear and intimidation. Young people, numbering over 35,000, came from all over the island for the festivities.

Just after 4p.m., when the Nicosia Stadium was filled to capacity, the Greek Consulate-General, Mr. Vlachos, arrived, amid cheers and slogan shouting. After him came the Bishop of Salamis and the Rev. Kallinicos, overseer of the Archbishopric. Both were greeted with "Long live Makarios".

In an inauguration speech Dr. Dervis said that the island would remain vigilant and unbent in the demand for self-determination. He praised the youth of the island for maintaining their attitude towards these principles.

There was a great procession round the stadium of young people dressed in national costume, marching in regional groups.

Pride of place was given to the relatives of the so-called martyrs--men who had been killed or executed by the British security forces--- at the stadium. While these young people enjoyed themselves in their games and exhibition of sport, the rest of the island waited in fear; they waited for EOKA to strike again. In the last few days several Greek Cypriots have been shot or beaten to death by their fellow countrymen for Communistic tendencies. The situation in Cyprus is extremely grave. Almost daily murders are occurring. The Turks on the island have also started killing their own folk. Their organisation for Turkish Resistance is pledged to attack, murderously, any Turk guilty of having Leftish sympathies.
