Background: A major confrontation erupted during the French Tennis Championships on Tuesday (3 June) when the Spanish star Manuel Orantes refused to play a re-arranged match against the Argentinean, Guillermo Vilas-and was eliminated from the championship. Orantes' protest followed Vilas' failure to turn up for the game the previous day, pleading illness.

SYNOPSIS: Crowds at the Stade Roland Garros in Paris waited in vain for the re-arranged match to begin. Vilas, recovered from the illness which kept him out of the game the day before, arrived on court in time to bear the umpire announce that Orantes was also in the stadium but was refusing to play. Later Orantes explained that he had withdrawn from the game after talking it over with other players in the tournament and in protest against the organisers' giving Vilas time to receive treatment for his illness. French tennis Federation Chairman, Philippe Chatrier however, said that under the rules, the referee was entitled to change the order of play. He entitled to change the order of play. He said Orantes had been given ample warning that the game with Vilas had been re-arranged. As for the crowd, they-expressed their disagreement with all the decisions.

The result of this difference of opinion about the legality of Orantes' move, is a clash between the French tennis authorities and the powerful Association of Tennis Professionals, led by its director, Earl Bucholtz. Bucholtz said he felt the rules of Grand Prix tennis had been violated by the French authorities.

Meantime the women's singles championship went on smoothly, with American Kathy Jordan, nearest the camera, losing to Mrs Evert-Lloyd. In the first set, she went down 6-2.

Miss Jordan, now furthest from the camera, served to saved the match in the second set. But after this next service game, she went out of the tournament to the consistent Mrs Evert-Lloyd, 6-2, 6-0.
