(NEXT) .... and then, at five-hundred miles an hour, a leisurely "show the people" pass over Melbourne itself. At 15-hundred feet, the Mirage had to be throttled back to avoid breaking windows. It carries guided missiles, and can fly day and night, in all weather.

Background: The first of Australia's new Mirage het fighters was handed over to the R-double-A-F today (29.1.64) at Avalon Airfield, near Melbourne. The Air Force is buying one-hundred of the French-designed jets, each of which costs one-million pounds. At today's ceremony, the Prime Minister, Sir Robert Menzies said there was no better fighter in the world than the Mirage. Sir Robert said the handing-over marked a notable advance in Australian's defence. The log-book for the first Mirage was handed by the Minister for Supply, Mr. Fairhall, to the Minister for Air, Mr. Fairbairn. Then, the 15-hundred mile and hour fighter streaked into the sky.
