    Background: SEVERAL THOUSAND BUILDING WORKERS MARCHED THROUGH THE STREETS OF ROME YESTERDAY IN A DEMONSTRATION AIMED AT EARNING THEM A SHORTER WORKING WEEK.

    A BIG POLICE CONTINGENT PREVENTED ANY INCIDENTS BUT THE DEMONSTRATORS SUCCEEDED IN SNARLING TRAFFIC FOR MORE THAN AN HOUR IN THE CITY CENTRE. THE WORKERS HAD BEEN WAITING SINCE FEBRUARY FOR APPROVAL ON AN AGREEMENT ENTITLING THEM TO A SHORTER WORKING WEEK.

    FROM APRIL 1 UNTIL SEPTEMBER 30, THE WORKERS WERE SEEKING A 44-HOUR WEEK, DISTRIBUTED OVER FIVE DAYS. THEY WANTED FOUR DAYS ON NINE-HOUR SHIFTS AND A FIFTH AT EIGHT HOURS.

    FROM OCTOBER 1 TO DECEMBER 31, THE WORKERS WERE SEEKING A 40-HOUR FIVE-DAY WORKING WEEK AND A 48-HOUR SIX DAY WORKING WEEK, TO BE WORKED ALTERNATIVELY.

    A SPOKESMAN FOR THE BUILDING UNIONS SAID DURING THE DEMONSTRATION THAT THE AGREEMENT HAD BEEN APPROVED IN PRINCIPLE BY THE MINISTRY OF TRANSPORT BUT TO DATE THERE HAD BEEN NO CONFIRMATION.
