Background: Hundreds of Britain's blind people marched on Parliament on Thursday (15 may) demanding an increase in the Government's special payment to the unemployed registered blind.

The payment now stands at 1.25 Sterling above normal unemployment benefits, and the blind people want it raised to five pounds. When the special payment was introduced in 1948, it was set at a level of about 75 pence (Sterling). It has risen only 50 pence in 27 years.

The demonstrators, guided by sticks, seeing-eye dogs and each other, marched two miles to the Houses of Parliament where some of them, and their dogs, were allowed inside to lobby their Members of Parliament.
