Background: A huge crowd packed Twickenham Rugby ground in London on Saturday (15 January) for the championship match between England and Wales.
The match was won by Wales by 12 points to 3. All the scoring, with the exception of one converted try by Wales, came from penalty goals.
Wales owed its victory to the kicking of Barry John -- here of last year's Lions tour of New Zealand.
The only English points came from a penalty kicked by Bob Hiller
SYNOPSIS: Twickenham rugby ground in London - and the start of a championship match between England and Wales. England is kicking off - and moving from left to right. The opening kick gained only a little ground for the England side - and a roach quickly formed. (PAUSE 2 SECONDS) A line-out infringement gave England the first chance to score. Number 15, Hiller, to attempt the penalty.
England three, Wales nil.
England's lead was short-lived. Wales' has the opportunity to even the score, as Barry John lines up for a penalty.
The score - three all... and jubilation among Welsh supporters.
Barry John to attempt another penalty -- this time on the opposite side of the field. Sports writers say this is not his favourite kicking position. But the kick is on target. (PAUSE 5 SECONDS) Wales lead by six points to three -- the score at half-time.
The only try of the match developed from this rouck in front of the England goal. The ball comes out of Welshman Edwards, he feeds to John Williams who dashes for the line.
The kick of Barry John is again right on the target -- and the match ends with Wales defeating England by 12 points to three. (PAUSE THREE SECONDS) And as so often on last year's Lions tour of New Zealand, the hero is Barry John.
