Background: The co-ordination of population programmes in africa, which are being evolved by various bodies, is being discussed at the annual Regional Inter-Agency Co-Ordination meeting on Population which opened in Addis Ababa on Wednesday (3 July).

1974 is World Population Year and, because of this, there has been a concerted effort by everyone concerned in the population field to try and foster interest in the population problems of Africa and throughout the world. A World Population Conference is to be held in Rumania in August at which it is hoped some kind of world-wide cooperation on population policies will emerge.

Several United Nations agencies concerned with population are taking part, among them the U.N. Population Division (UNDP), the UN Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA), the UN International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF), the International Labour Organisation (ILO), the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO), the U.N. Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), and the UN-sponsored Regional Demographic Training and Research Institutes in accra, Cairo and Yaounde.

The meeting -- the fourth annual regional one -- has been organised by the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA). Collaboration between the ECA and the various UN agencies, and possible co-ordination in the fields of research and studies, information, training, an African Census programme, and a household surveys programme will be the main topics for discussion.
