WARD" "What are you going to do when you get back to Lusaka?"

SITHOLE: "Well, I'm going to join others and we are working very hard trying to streamline the ZLC so that our work can be carried on more effectively than we have done in the past."

WARD: "You've called the ZLC, that is the Zimbabwe Liberation Council, you've called it the external group of the ANC. Is this not in fact a complete split from the ANC which is now allegedly led by Joshua Nkomo?"

SITHOLE: "Well it is not a split. The ZLC is the external wing of the ANC."

WARD: "What will your next step be if the Smith government officially recognises Nkomo as the leader of the ANC and starts negotiating with him for any future development in Rhodesia?"

SITHOLE: "Whatever Smith does will not influence us one way or the other. What to us is important is majority rule now. I'm quite satisfied in my own mind that Mr. Smith will not grant majority rule now to the African people. He is a dedicated disciple of white minority rule."

WARD: "How are you going to achieve majority rule?"

SITHOLE: "We have decided on the armed struggle course. The constitutional way has utterly failed. only the armed struggle way is the alternative open to us."

WARD: You're a religious man. Do you feel this is morally justified in a Christian sense?"

SITHOLE: "Yes, we are fighting a holy war."

WARD: "Has the split in the ANC not been particularly bad for your credibility as a future leader?"

SITHOLE: "No, it hasn't because the African people understand our leadership. They treat mr. Nkomo as a traitor as Tshombe in Katanga when he was doing a lot of deals with Sir Roy Welensky."

WARD: "Outside Africa though, the image of the ANC seems to be a little tarnished. it has been said that if you can't solve your own political party problems now you'll never be able to lead a united black Rhodesia."

SITHOLE: "The black in Rhodesia are united on the whole, it's only the common faction that has broken away."

WARD: "Do you see Mr. Vorster's role as an apparent mediator. Are you suspicious of his motives?"

    SITHOLE: "Yes, I am suspicious."

WARD: "So what do you think his motives are then?"

SITHOLE: "He wants to buy more time, i think that is his biggest motive."

WARD: "Well Mr. Sithole thank you very much indeed."

    SITHOLE: "Thank you."

Background: Rev. Ndabaningi Sithole, Chairman of the Lusaka based Zimbabwe Liberation Council, told newsmen in London on Sunday (5 October) that a stepped up armed struggle was the only way left open to Africans to gain black majority rule in Rhodesia.

Mr. Sithole ruled out another attempt by the ZLC, a militant faction of the African National Council (ANC), to hold further talks with the regime of Rhodesian prime Minister, Ian Smith, following the recent failure of the Victoria Falls constitutional talks.

Mr. Sithole was in London following the loss of his power struggle in the ANC to mr. Joshua Nkomo who is now reported to be planning further talks with Mr. Smith.
