Background: THREE UNARMED PRISON GUARDS DIED OF KNIFE WOUNDS AS A RESULT OF A RIOT IN THE MENARD STATE PENITENTIARY IN CHESTER, ILLINOIS ON WEDNESDAY. THE RIOT BEGAN WHEN A FIRE-BOMB MADE FROM PAINT THINNER WAS THROWN DURING A PRISON MEAL. THIRTY OF THE 2,500 PRISONERS AT THE JAIL TOOK PART IN THE RIOT.

THE RIOT LASTED FOR ABOUT FOUR HOURS. DURING THIS TIME RING-LEADERS HELD HOSTAGE SOME OF THE PRISON GUARDS AND OTHER INMATES INSIDE THE PRISON KITCHEN. AFTERWARDS THEY SURRENDERED AND THE MEN SUSPECTED OF LEADING THE RIOT WERE INTERVIEWED IN THEIR CELLS:
THE THREE PRISONERS INTERVIEWED WERE ALONZO JONES - 29 - WHO IS SERVING A THREE TO TEN YEARS SENTENCE FOR THEFT, JOHN STAMPS SERVING 25 YEARS FOR MURDER, AND PRENTISS GRIFFIN - 26 - WHO IS SERVING THREE TO FIVE YEARS FOR ARMED ROBBERY. PRENTISS HAS A LONG CRIMINAL RECORD. HE HAS PREVIOUSLY SERVED SENTENCES FOR ROBBERY, RAPE AND LARCENY. ONE OTHER MAN, WILLIAM BASSET - 26 - IS ALSO THOUGHT TO BE A RINGLEADER.

PRISON OFFICERS ARE SEARCHING THE PRISON FOR MORE KNIVES LIKE THE ONES USED TO KILL THE THREE JAILERS. THEY HAVE NOT YET RECOVERED THE ACTUAL WEAPONS USED. WHEN THE PRISONERS SURRENDERED THEY WERE UNARMED - AND OFFICERS BELIEVE THE KNIVES HAVE BEEN CONCEALED SOMEWHERE IN THE KITCHEN. SINCE THE SEARCH BEGAN TWO MORE KNIVES - MADE FROM IRON BARS GROUND TO SHARP POINTS - HAVE BEEN FOUND IN THE PRISON.
